doubt、suspicion、distrust与uncertainty均含有“怀疑”之意。

doubt : 指对事物的真、假有怀疑。

  • I’m having doubts about his ability to do the job.
    我对他是否能胜任此项工作还有一些疑问。
  • If there’s any doubt about the rocket’s engines, we ought to cancel the launch.
    如果对火箭发动机还存有任何疑虑,我们都应该取消此次发射。
  • The prosecution has to establish his guilt beyond reasonable doubt (US beyond a reasonable) doubt.

suspicion : 语气较强,指对某人做某事的目的、意图有怀疑,或认为某人做错事,但无确凿证据而产生怀疑。

  • I have a suspicion that he only asked me out because my brother persuaded him to.
    我怀疑是我哥哥说服他约我出去的。
  • She had a nagging/sneaking suspicion that she might have sent the letter to the wrong address.
    她心烦意乱地猜想/心里暗想自己可能把信寄错了地址。

distrust : 一般用词,泛指对某人某事不信任而感到怀疑。

  • The two groups have existed in a state of mutual distrust for centuries.
    几个世纪以来这两个群体一直处于互不信任的状态之中。
  • She has a (deep) distrust of the media.
    她对媒体(非常)不信任。

uncertainty : 侧重指对某事或选择等需作决定时的迟疑不决。

  • There is considerable uncertainty about the company’s future.

  • He had an air of uncertainty about him.
