axis源自拉丁语axis（轴、中心点），其最基本的含义为“轴、轴线”，即一个物体或一个三维图形绕着旋转或者可以设想绕着旋转的一根直线，比如地轴就是“the earth’s axis”。当用在几何上时，axis指的则是“将物体平分为二的对称中心线”。若是在图表中，axis又指“固定的参考轴线”或“坐标轴”，比如：
