区别辨析center、middle、heart、core与midst

这些名词均含有“中心”之意。

center : 指三维空间的中心点，也可比喻抽象事物的中心。

• There was a large table in the centre of the room.
  屋子中央有张大桌子。

  市中心

middle : 一般指时间、空间或过程两端间等距的部分。

• This is my class photo – I’m the one in the middle.
  这是我的全班合影——中间的那个是我。
• He was standing in the middle of the road.
  他正站在路中央。
• The noise woke us up in the middle of the night.
  半夜吵闹声吵醒了我们。

heart : 指事物最内部或最重要的部分，表地理位置时可与center换用。

• The demonstrators will march through the heart of the capital.
  示威者将游行穿过首都的中心地区。
• A disagreement about boundaries is at the heart of the dispute.
  争议的焦点就是边界问题。
• Let’s get to the heart of the matter.
  让我们考虑一下最关键的事情。

core : 指某事物固定的中心部分或最重要的核心部分。比喻意义指某物的精华。

• The lack of government funding is at the core of the problem.
  缺乏政府拨款是问题的关键所在。

midst : 书面语用词，指在一个群体的深处或在某活动的进程中。

• She caught sight of Johnny in their midst (= among them), laughing and talking.
  她看到约翰尼在他们当中，又说又笑。
• I’m sorry but I’m too busy – I’m in the midst of writing a report.
  恐怕我太忙了——我正在写一份报告。
• The country is in the midst of an economic crisis.
  这个国家正在经历一场经济危机。
