immerse、dip、duck、plunge与submerge这些动词均有“沉浸、浸入”之意。

immerse : 侧重全部被液体所覆盖,也可用于比喻意义。

  • She got some books out of the library and immersed herself in Jewish history and culture.
    她从图书馆借了一些书,然后埋头于犹太历史和文化之中。
  • The shells should be immersed in boiling water for two minutes.
    贝类应在沸水中浸上两分钟。

dip : 指部分地、暂时地或轻微地放进液体,多暗示一种谨慎或试探性的动作。

  • Dip the fish in the batter, then drop it into the hot oil.
    先把鱼在面糊中浸一下,然后再放进热油中。
  • She dipped her toe into the pool to see how cold it was.
    她把脚趾伸到游泳池里试试水有多凉。

duck : 指把头伸进水中,或指游泳时开玩笑地把一个人的头按入水中。

  • The boys were splashing around and ducking each other in the pool.
    男孩子们在游泳池里击水打闹,并按住对方往水里压。

plunge : 暗示迅速而有力的动作,但浸入不一定很深。

  • I really enjoyed my plunge (= jumping in and swimming) in the pool.
    我很喜欢在游泳池里跳水游泳。

submerge : 指长时间的完全浸入、潜入,强调浸入液体深层。

  • The submarine submerged when enemy planes were sighted.
    潜艇发现敌机后马上下潜。
  • She was taken to hospital after being submerged in an icy river for 45 minutes.
    她在冰冷的河水中浸了45分钟后被送进了医院。
