区别辨析equal与equivalent

equal与equivalent这两个形容词均有“相等的”之意。

equal : 指几个物或事在数目、数量、重量、程度或价值等方面完全相等。

• One litre is equal to 1.76 imperial pints.
  1升等于1.76英制品脱。
• One box may look bigger than the other, but in fact they are roughly (= almost) equal in volume.
  一个盒子可能看起来比另一个大，但其实它们的容量大致相等。

equivalent : 指几个物或事彼此对等，或者具有同等的价值、效果或意义等。

• She’s doing the equivalent job in the new company but for more money.
  她在新公司做同样的工作，但薪水比以前高。
• Is $50 equivalent to about £30?
  50美元是不是大约相当于30英镑？
