中国实行国家公园体制，目的是保持自然生态系统的原真性和完整性，保护生物多样性，保护生态安全屏障，给子孙后代留下珍贵的自然资产。

8月19日，第一届国家公园论坛在青海省西宁市开幕。在论坛开幕之际，中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平发来贺信指出，生态文明建设对人类文明发展进步具有十分重大的意义。
President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the first National Park Forum, which opened Monday in Xining, the capital city of northwest China’s Qinghai province. Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, said the construction of ecological civilization is of great significance to the development and progress of human civilizations.
习近平指出，国家公园体制是我国推进自然生态保护、建设美丽中国、促进人与自然和谐共生的一项重要举措。
Xi said the national park system is an important measure taken by China to promote ecological protection, build a beautiful country and pursue harmony between humans and nature.
2016年，我国首次开展国家公园体制试点，包括三江源国家公园、中国大熊猫国家公园、东北虎豹国家公园等。2017年，中共中央办公厅、国务院办公厅印发《建立国家公园体制总体方案》。该方案的发布意味着国家公园体制建设进入实质阶段。根据方案，到2020年，建立国家公园体制试点基本完成，整合设立一批国家公园，分级统一的管理体制基本建立，国家公园总体布局初步形成。建立国家公园体制是党的十八届三中全会提出的重点改革任务，是我国生态文明制度建设的重要内容，对于推进自然资源科学保护和合理利用，促进人与自然和谐共生，推进美丽中国建设，具有极其重要的意义。
