在法国大革命之前，lettre de cachet曾表示一封由法国国王和其他官员签发的信函，用于授权监禁某人。此类文书通常都是官方用一种压入软蜡的印章标记的。这种印章最初在法国被称为cachet，衍生自中古法语动词cacher，其意思是“按”或“隐藏”。cachet的印章意义则是从17世纪中期引入英语中的，然后到了19世纪，这个单词开始有现在的引申含义，开始表示象征声望的特质，然后到了世纪末，就完全表示声望本身了。
