区别辨析compose、comprise、consist与constitute

这些动词均含“组成，构成”之意。

compose : 正式用词，多用被动态。指将两个或两个以上的人或物放到一起形成一个整体。

• Ten men compose the committee.
  委员会由十人组成。
• Air is composed mainly of nitrogen and oxygen.
  空气主要由氮和氧构成。
• The committee is composed of MPs, doctors, academics and members of the public.
  委员会由议员、医生、学者和普通民众组成。
• The audience was composed largely of young people.
  观众中大部分都是年轻人。

comprise : 正式用词，指整体是由几个独立的部分所组成。

• The course comprises a class book, a practice book, and a CD.
  这门课的教材包括一本课堂用书、一本练习用书和一张光盘。
• The class is comprised mainly of Italian and French students.
  这个班主要由意大利和法国学生组成。
• Italian students comprise 60 percent of the class.
  意大利学生占全班人数的60%。

consist与of连用，指一个整体由几个部分组成，或由某些材料构成。

• The team consists of four Europeans and two Americans.
  该队由四个欧洲人和两个美国人组成。
• It’s a simple dish to prepare, consisting mainly of rice and vegetables.
  这道菜很容易做，主料是米饭和蔬菜。

constitute : 正式用词，指由某些部分组成一个整体或构成某物的基本成分。在句中，主语表事物的组成部分，宾语表示事物的整体。

• Women constitute about ten percent of Parliament.
  女性在议会中约占10%。
• The under-18s constitute nearly 25 percent of the town’s population.
  18岁以下的人口占该城镇人口的近25%。
